The Vision

A dynamic, close-knit family desired a landscape that would harmonize with their love for social gatherings, cooking, and family activities. Their home in Western Springs, IL, reflected their vibrant lifestyle, yet something was missing in their outdoor space. Seeking a transformation that would bring their backyard to life, they turned to Hursthouse.

When the Hursthouse team first visited the property, they immediately recognized the potential for a design that would resonate with the family’s heritage and lifestyle. The existing landscape didn’t reflect who they were or how they wanted to use the space. The goal was to create an environment that was both elegant and functional, accommodating their love for cooking and entertaining.

The Plan

Hursthouse’s plan incorporated several key elements to achieve the desired transformation:

Cultural Connection: A Gaucho grill was integrated into the design, honoring the family’s Brazilian roots and their tradition of social cooking.

Open and Inviting Spaces: The backyard was designed to remain open and spacious, allowing the children plenty of room to play.

Two Distinct Living Areas: One area focused on comfortable seating around a natural gas fire pit, ideal for family gatherings and enjoying the sunset with a glass of wine.

The first phase of the project centered around the central pavilion, the focal point of the backyard. This space was designed for year-round use, offering a perfect setting for cooking, sharing stories, and enjoying time with family and friends.

The Transformation

The Pavilion

The pavilion, detached from the house for singular emphasis, features high rooflines to maintain unobstructed sightlines. It was constructed with materials that echo the home’s architecture, such as limestone and bluestone, ensuring aesthetic continuity. Equipped with a Gaucho grill and a conventional gas grill, the pavilion is a chef’s dream, complete with hot and cold running water for food prep, and ample space for dining and relaxation.

Planting Scheme

Hursthouse’s team developed a planting scheme that is colorful, low-maintenance, and rich in textures. Seasonal planters add year-round interest, while a mix of perennials and ornamental trees, like the smoke bush with its vibrant plumes and the Allium with its pink flowers, create a visually stunning landscape. Hammocks add a touch of relaxation, offering a peaceful retreat.

Open Spaces

The backyard’s open lawn provides a versatile area for the children to play, while carefully placed privacy features ensure the space feels intimate and secure. A fire pit area, surrounded by comfortable furniture, invites relaxation and socialization, making it a favorite spot for family and friends.

Living It

The family has been enjoying their Hursthouse-designed landscape, which perfectly complements their home and lifestyle. The outdoor space has become an extension of their home, ideal for family activities, cooking, and entertaining. The Gaucho grill has become a central feature, allowing them to carry on their culinary traditions and host memorable gatherings.

The successful transformation of their backyard into a functional, beautiful space reflects Hursthouse’s commitment to creating personalized landscapes that enhance their clients’ lives. The family’s landscape is not only a testament to thoughtful design but also a celebration of their heritage and the joys of family life.
